Hosted by Carbfix and ON Power, the visit brought together representatives from the European Commission, Norway, Canada, Liechtenstein, EFTA and Iceland to learn about geothermal energy, carbon removal and permanent carbon storage.
A key focus of the visit was Carbfix's carbon mineral storage technology. Participants learned how captured CO₂ is dissolved in water and injected into basalt formations, where it is permanently transformed into stone through a natural mineralization process.

The delegation also learned about Silverstone, a project developed by Carbfix and ON Power with support from the EU Innovation Fund. Through the project, 99.6% of emissions from the Hellisheiði geothermal power plant have been neutralized, demonstrating how carbon capture and storage can support industrial decarbonization.

During a visit to Carbfix's injection site, participants saw how CO₂ storage operations are monitored and how Iceland's unique geology enables secure and permanent mineral storage.
The programme also included visits to Climeworks' Mammoth direct air capture facility and VAXA Technologies, highlighting the growing ecosystem of climate innovation surrounding the Hellisheiði geothermal power plant.
The visit reflects increasing international interest in scalable climate solutions and the importance of collaboration across countries, industries and technologies as the transition to a low-carbon economy accelerates.
