The Mammoth plant, Climeworks‘ latest and most ambitious project, represents a significant leap in carbon capture technology. This new plant will increase direct air capture and storage capacity in Hellisheiði by tenfold, adding to the existing Orca plant‘s capacity. Here, an absorption column designed by Carbfix is integrated into the Mammoth plant. The column selectively dissolves CO₂ prior to injection and thus maximizes the system efficiency and energy demand. The CO₂ charged water is then injected using the Carbfix injection technology. With Mammoth, Climeworks aims to scale its operations quickly, laying the groundwork for achieving a gigaton-scale capacity.

The Mammoth plant will be powered by renewable geothermal energy supplied by ON Power. Electicity generated from steam turbines is used for fans drawing air through series of collector containers where CO₂ is selectively bound to reactive filters. Once the filters are full, the containers close and the filters are heated to around 100°C using geothermal water from the power plant. This causes the filter material to let go of the CO₂. Once the geothermal water has been used in Mammoth, it is returned to ON Power and the remaining heat is used for the capital area's district heating system.
