Carbfix scales up CO₂ mineral storage to climate relevant scales. We target hard-to-abate industries and partner on Direct Air Capture (DAC) and Bioenergy with Carbon Capture and Storage (BECCS) projects.
Our mission is to significantly contribute to climate recovery through worldwide scaling and further development of underground CO₂ mineral storage.
Carbfix began as a research collaboration in 2006, formalised by key partners in 2007, and has evolved into a fully operational industrial process. Our innovative method transforms CO₂ and H₂S emissions into stable carbonate minerals, showcasing our commitment to climate recovery.
Nature stores CO₂ in rocks underground. We wondered if we could replicate and accelerate this process by dissolving CO₂ in water and injecting it into the earth.
By 2012 we were ready to start pilot injections in Hellisheiði in Iceland. It was an exciting point in our history but by no means an easy task.
Beginning of commercial operations at Hellisheidi geothermal power plant.
Storage of CO₂ captured via direct air capture in a partnership with Climeworks.
Carbfix receives a €115 million grant from the EU Innovation Fund to develop the Coda Terminal.
Cross-border injection of CO₂ imported from Switzerland at Hellisheidi geothermal power plant.
Carbfix achieved a major milestone by injecting CO₂ dissolved in seawater into Iceland's basaltic subsurface at Helguvík in Reykjanesbær, Iceland in 2023.
At Carbfix we are courageous, honest, responsible, and team players leading the way in innovative carbon capture and storage for climate recovery.
